Free Time and Silhouettes

I had the privilege of being the R&L Fusion Cheer coach this basketball season for the Lambert and Richey public schools in Montana. These two schools co-op for athletics because the high schools numbers are quite small. I had a wonderful time teaching the seven cheerleaders some new cheers and stunts! Now that the basketball season is over I have more down time to devote to my blog. Yessssss! So I though I would start with some unique winter silhouette art projects! I got this idea from a post on pinterest! (I will try to find the link and post it soon) First, I had the kids create the background swirls with a crayons. Next, They traced over their crayon patterns with watercolor. We used a cool color palate to make it feel more wintery.  As the watercolor background was drying, I had the kids create the  silhouette from half of a sheet of black construction paper. I had the kids draw a wavy line first with white crayon or colored pencil. This is bottom of the black silhouette. Then they each added trees and snowmen on top of the wavy line. Cutting out the complete silhouette was the most difficult part. They had a hard time cutting closely around each tree and snowman. For this age group I would recommend cutting out the wavy line first. Then  cutting out separate snowmen and tree shapes and gluing separately. This was a fun project that turned out great! It also supported our study of a winter weather unit. I hope you enjoy!

First Post: Loving First Grade

Hi everyone!
This is my first attempt at blogging so we will see how it goes! I am currently in my second year of teaching so I am still fairly new to the profession. I have been reading blogs ever since I was hired for my first teaching position last year. I am 24 and I live in Lambert, Montana with my fiance Terran Hillesland (he is in my profile picture with me.) :) Lambert is a very rural community with a population of around 400. Most of our students are farm kids that ride an hour or more on the bus to get to our school. Last year I only had 4 students in my entire first grade class and they were all boys! Quite a nice first year of teaching I have to say. I am originally from Missoula, Montana and I studied education at the University of Montana in Missoula. Lambert is about a 10 hour drive from my hometown and obviously much smaller, so it took some adjusting to the small town atmosphere.  This year I have 14 students in my first grade class and I am loving every minute of it! I have enjoyed reading all the other first grade teaching blogs so I decided to start one myself! I will try to post some of our fun holiday projects! Happy blogging!
